The five elements

Metal

Leads to the archetype The Refiner

Metal is the element of edge: the capacity to reduce something to what actually matters.

  • Precision
  • Judgement
  • Standards
  • Clarity
  • Restraint

What it describes

Metal is what Earth bears, and it is the element of refinement, judgement, and standard. Where Wood adds and Fire expresses, Metal removes. It is associated with precision, boundaries, and the willingness to say the unwelcome accurate thing. Metal is what gives a system its shape by taking away what does not belong to it.

How it shows up

Metal tends to show up as cutting before adding. People with a lot of it are comfortable being the one who names the problem, and they often show respect by being accurate with people rather than comfortable. They can tell the difference between polished and correct, and they hold a standard when the room has agreed to lower it.

Where the friction is

The friction is delivery and slack. Metal would rather give a true answer than a kind one, which is frequently misread as coldness, and its edge can make it hard to be near. It also tightens slowly under load, so strain appears as irritation at imprecision rather than as obvious exhaustion.

What balances it

Fire is the counterweight. Metal refines and separates; Fire connects and warms. A Metal pattern with some Fire in it tends to land its accuracy in a way people can receive.

Where you sit in all this

Reading about one element tells you what it is. The test measures the proportions in you across all five — twenty questions, about two minutes, no signup and nothing to type.
